Thanks to the Founding Father...

It is hard to imagine that the organisation as we know it today began as just a vision many years ago.

Back in the days when people with a disability were often excluded from society, William Townsend's aim was to educate the Blind and the Deaf and teach them a trade, so that they would not only be accepted by the community, but become an integral part of it.

Townsend House first opened its doors to five children back in 1874, and so began a commitment which continues today. Over the years the facilities and services of Townsend House have grown and adapted to suit the changing needs of children and their families, as well as the technology available. William Townsend, forward thinking as he must have been, would be astounded to see what we are able to achieve now.

We are proud to continue the tradition started by Townsend all those years ago. Thousands of children are the richer for his zeal and dedication and that of the men and women who nurtured and developed his vision and continue to do so.
