About the Service

CanDo4Kids offers a comprehensive service to Deaf and hearing impaired children and young people, those who may have additional disabilities and their families. Our program philosophy is based on meeting the individual needs of children and families, being inclusive of their communication styles and unique family culture. Services are flexible to assist individuals who are unable to access similar support from other agencies and/or programs.

What does this Service offer to Families?

The Family Support Service offers the following sevices to families with deaf or hearing impaired children.

• Information regarding hearing impairment, Deaf Culture and Auslan
• Home visits to determine the needs of the child and family and to provide home based supports
• Advocacy, support and assistance at key transition times
• Communication options and strategies that encourage positive family interactions
• Support for children who are not Deaf or hearing impaired but use Auslan as a mode of communication
• Opportunities to participate in community activities attended by Deaf and hearing impaired children and adults

We also provide supported involvement in our specialized recreation and social programs, these include:

• Gym Club (North and South)
• Movie Club (North and South)
• Computer Club
• Fun for Under Fives Program
• School Holiday Program
• Parent Support
• Transition Support
• Access to Auslan Playgroup
• "Thumbs Up" Program - Deaf awareness program for school children
• Occupational Therapy
• Access to The Deaf Mentor Program, to assist greater understanding of Deaf and hearing impaired issues for the child and family

Family Support Service - Deaf and Hearing Impaired works closely with DECS, non-government schools and other services for the Deaf and hearing impaired, to ensure a smooth transition occurs from one service to another when and if necessary.

Referrals

Referrals can be made by professionals, parents, carers agencies or other interested persons with the parent/s permission to CanDo4Kids.

CanDo4Kids also supports:

PHISA (Parents of Hearing Impaired South Australia) through the sponsorship of their quarterly PHISA newsletter.
