Early Intervention Service: Vision Impairment
Offers a service to babies and young children who are blind or vision impaired and may have additional disabilities. The service aims to support families in providing their child with opportunities to realise their developmental potential.

Support may include…
- Functional vision assessment and strategies for promoting the child’s use of vision.
- Practical information and support related to the child’s vision.
- Suggestions and strategies for promoting the child’s development.
- Links to community groups.
- Opportunities for parents to meet each other.
- Play and toy ideas to encourage the child’s development.
Our team can…
- Visit in the home or community setting on a regular basis.
- Provide a report about the child’s functional vision and developmental progress.
- Collaborate with other service providers supporting the children and their families.
- Organise group activities and provide opportunities for families and children to get to know one another.
- Accompany parents to ophthalmology appointments.
- Provide information and advice about vision impairment to community services.
Criteria for service
Children up to the age of 6, with a vision impairment that can not be corrected by contact lenses or glasses.
Referrals
Can be made by phone contact or written referral. Referrals can be made by parents, health professionals or any interested person. Parental permission is required for a referral.
