 Occupational Therapy

Who?

Occupational Therapists at CanDo4Kids work with children and young people who are blind/vision impaired and/or Deaf/hearing impaired.

What?

The occupational therapist can work with children and young people, and their families to assist them in the following areas:

  • Hand skills: e.g. handwriting, drawing, cutting
  • Posture during activities
  • Sensory Processing: How they respond to visual and auditory information, movement, touch, and information about the position of their body
  • Gross motor and fine motor coordination
  • Problem solving, planning & organisational skills
  • Independent living skills: e.g. self care, home tasks

Occupational Therapy...

  • Promotes development and stimulates learning in children, assisting them to be more meaningfully involved in the world around them.
  • Aims to improve the quality of life of children by helping them to participate in everyday activities.

Where?

The occupational therapist can work with children on an individual basis at home, school, or in the community.

Children may also be offered involvement in a group programme.

Group programmes are held on a needs basis and include:

  • Hand Skills
  • Aquatic Therapy
  • Independent Living Skills

How?

Once a child has been referred an appropriate time and location will be negotiated for an assessment.

Depending on the level of need the child may be offered:

  • Regular individual therapy sessions
  • Group programs
  • Activity ideas for home and school
  • Information for teachers and parents
  • Consultation with kindy, school, childcare and / or other agencies.

The child’s progress will be re-assessed regularly and the need for ongoing therapy reviewed.

Referrals

Children who are blind/vision impaired and/or deaf/hearing impaired can be referred to the occupational therapy service by their parents, teachers, or other professionals working with them.
