Thank you for helping us make group therapy more accessible for babies like Ollie and his mum Amy.

Ollie was diagnosed with bilateral hearing loss at five weeks old. Understandably for first-time-mum Amy, this was a path she never imagined having to walk. The dreams she and husband Daniel had for their young family gave way to feelings of worry and sadness.

OIlie failed his first hearing test days after birth

After failing his first hearing test in hospital, a standard test conducted on all newborns, Amy didn't think it would be a permanent diagnosis.

"Everyone told me that it was probably just fluid and that the second test would give us the answer we were searching for. And that’s what I believed. Come the second failed test and I was hit with a wave of emotion that you can’t quite explain until you have experienced it," Amy said.

The comprehensive tests conducted at 2 and 5 weeks delivered the difficult diagnosis the family had not been expecting: hearing loss in both ears.

After riding a wave of emotions that Amy described as "the 7 stages of grief", the family went to work preparing Ollie for all the supports he would need to aid his development.

They soon began attending Can:Do 4Kids for one-on-one Listening and Spoken Language therapy, but importantly, also joined a weekly group therapy session called Tiny Tots.

Tiny Tots creates a social space for babies to learn in and for parents to form vital support networks with those in the same situation.

"We are so happy we have had the opportunity to join Tiny Tots! I have made some great friends and Ollie has learnt so much in such a short time. It is a great outlet for us as parents to chat to others who are in a similar position," Amy said.
