Meet Zeb

Meet Zeb

Zeb was diagnosed with severe hearing loss at three weeks old. He came to Can:Do 4Kids three weeks later.

Zeb and Tiana's First Days at Can:Do 4Kids

Learning that your weeks-old newborn has hearing loss is a worrying moment for any parent.

This is the situation Tiana found herself in when her three-week-old Zebedee was diagnosed with severe hearing loss in both ears.

Initially it was shock and not really understanding what it meant. I kept thinking it would get better, but I don’t think I fully accepted that this was a permanent diagnosis for a few weeks,” Tiana said.

After being referred to Can:Do 4Kids by a family clinician, Zeb and his family began Listening and Spoken Language therapy. This vital and specialist early intervention helps children like Zeb develop spoken communication by focusing on listening skills and engaging his family in everyday language learning.

This was further supported by Tiny Tots group sessions. As this is often the first experience families have with therapy, Can:Do 4Kids provides these group sessions as a way for parents to connect and form bonds that guide them through the therapy journey.

Tiny Tots gave us a way to meet other families in the same situation as us and let us practice some of the things that we’re doing in speech therapy in a community setting. It makes us feel less alone, because they really get it and know where we’re at.”

When a child is diagnosed with hearing loss as young as Zeb, it's normal for families to feel overwhelmed, fearful or even unsure of where to start.

At Can:Do 4Kids, we help both parent and child to take these first steps into vital early intervention therapy, and provide the community and tools to navigate the journey with confidence for years to come.
