Walter, age 6, lives with an ultra-rare condition called Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 29. So rare, there are only around 50 cases worldwide documented in medical literature.
It affects his balance and coordination, making everyday movement challenging. Walter is also unable to speak, and communicates using a combination of Auslan and via a computer.
Over the past three years, Can:Do 4Kids therapists have supported Walter and his family.
“Walter’s therapy is highly personalised, practical, and goal-focused,” says his mother, Sarah. “What he learns in therapy carries over into everyday environments, and that has made a significant difference in his progress.”
Over time, Walter has achieved milestones that once felt out of reach.
He learned to write his name and draw pictures to communicate, and through consistent therapy, developed the ability to walk independently, navigate steps, and jump with both feet.
These skills have enabled him to participate more fully in social experiences, including playing with friends and attending birthday parties.
“Given the rarity and complexity of his condition, it’s remarkable to see Walter exceeding expectations!” Sarah says.
With your generous support, Can:Do 4Kids is creating a purpose-built outdoor space that will be vital in helping children with disability, to practise balance, coordination, and motor planning in a safe, structured environment that reflects real-world community spaces.
Our new Outdoor Sensory Play Area at our Noarlunga clinic will benefit children like Walter to learn, play and develop in a safe space, especially when public playgrounds can be unpredictable and challenging.
Your donation will help us ensure this vital therapy space becomes a reality for children like Walter to move with confidence and thrive in life.
A New Outdoor Sensory Play Area
Outdoor play is a fundamental part of childhood. It supports cognitive development and social inclusion. And we know that children with disability — including those who are blind, low vision, deaf or hard of hearing — often experience barriers that limit their access to play and social inclusion. The Outdoor Sensory Play Area is more than a playground; it is a sensory space, a powerful therapy tool, and real-world simulation that will empower children and their families to thrive.
See below for artist impressions of the purpose-built play spaces.
